Rural District
of Chianti

Creating a system to attract investments and promote the quality of the territory: this was the principle on which the Rural District of Chianti was established in 2017, in the area corresponding to the Chianti Classico Gallo Nero wine production zone.

Involved in the project alongside the Chianti Classico Wine Producers’ Consortium, are the area’s town administrations, the Chianti Classico DOP Olive Oil Consortium and the Foundation for the Protection of the Chianti Classico Territory. Their shared objective: to promote economic, social, cultural and tourism integration, in full respect of the conservation and reproduction of natural balance, and achieve the creation of a shared programme of activities.

The Governance

The governance del Rural District of Chianti has been divided between two systems, as established by regional law: the District Assembly (free participation) and the District Association, whose Chairman is Tommaso Marrocchesi Marzi of the Bibbiano estate at Castellina in Chianti.

The District’s goal is to become a local benchmark for development policies, able to tap internal and external resources, and develop a local economic project over several years with particular focus on natural and environmental, planning, and landscaping themes.

The task of participants in the Rural District of Chianti will also be monitoring the plan and assessing results. The first ambitious goal is to succeed in drafting the first District Contract, which will be able to open up new opportunities for all those involved and channel significant investments to the territory.
