UGA – Vagliagli

Today, the western part of the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga is identifies in the UGA Vagliagli, whose name originates from the small village located at the northern end of the territory. This Geographical Unit Additional can be used starting from 2027.

The northern portion of the UGA is primarily associated with the formation of the Macigno, with altitudes that regularly exceed 400 meters above sea level, in some cases exceeding 500 metres near the village of Vagliagli. Moving towards the south-east, we encounter the vast area of Pievasciata which is develops parallel to the course of the Arbia stream. Despite one complex geology, this area is characterized by a gentle landscape and uniform. In the southernmost area, altitudes often drop to below 300 meters above sea level, and the geological formation predominant consists of sands and marine conglomerates.

To the west, we finally find the Quercegrossa area, characterized on the sides western from the lake deposits and on the opposite side, which rises into direction of Vagliagli, by an increasingly marked presence of Training of Sillano and ‘Alberese.

UGA Vagliagli has a total area of 6,090 hectares, of which 1,080 are used to vineyards (17.7%) and 600 destined for olive groves (around 10% of the total). A a large part of the UGA is covered by forests, which occupy about half of the territory, with 3,100 hectares (50.9%).
