Harvest 2022
2022 Chianti Classico looks very promising: there were no spring frosts during the growing season when the risks of damaging the new buds is very high, neither was there any hail.
Seasonal trend
2022
The heat began in late spring and remained constant throughout the summer but without excessive peaks, thereby allowing the vines to adapt immediately to the high temperatures. The summer drought did not adversely affect development of the bunches because spring rains allowed the vines access to reserves of water and mineral nutrients during the period of drought. Temperatures remained high during the daytime but dropped at night: this diurnal range allowed the Sangiovese phenolics to develop at a regular rate.
In mid-August, periods of prolonged rainfall occurred, moderating the high temperatures and boosting water reserves, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. As a result, the grapes were very healthy on arrival at the cellar: the prolonged daily heat and relatively low humidity facilitated good grape health management and kept the risk of disease low.
Sangiovese was picked slightly earlier than the norm, around the 10th September and lasted a month as usual. First tastes of the new 2022 Chianti Classico wines seem to be very well balanced with good acidity and ripe, sweet tannins.
